This easy route, which skirts the south-western edge of Dartmoor, has a little of everything: farm fields, a pretty tranquil river, cool woods, a spooky tunnel, a gorse-covered down, good views, and sheep and Dartmoor ponies to keep you company! The route follows lanes, clear paths and tracks, and a surfaced cycleway. It is all very easy, apart from a short and not too steep climb in the middle.
The Skylark is a 19th century hostelry, and well named in view of its situation opposite a stretch of downland where larks abound. Fairly small and intimate, it comprises a bar and an adjoining dining area, both with wood-burning stoves. At the back is a very pleasant beer garden, comprising a patio and a lawn, with a children's play area. The menu ranges from baguettes and jacket postatoes to salads, steaks, fish and a range of vegetarian dishes. The food is sourced from local suppliers wherever possible.
