This is a fairly strenuous walk, but the rewards for your efforts are tremendous. Hedge-fringed lanes and a bridleway take you up to the outskirts of the neighbouring village of Holne, from where you climb to the open moor. Here you can enjoy the breathtaking views, deep stillness and enormous skies for which Dartmoor is famous. The route follows lanes, tracks and clear paths, but there are two steady climbs to contend with.
The Tradesman's Arms is an 18th century inn, comprising of three interlinked rooms. Beyond the bar is the conservatory, a light and airy room with superb views through the large windows and local paintings on the walls. The food is all home made and locally sourced where possible, and everthing cost less than £10. The menu ranges from baguettes and jacket potatoes to fresh fish, lamb and the specially recommended smoked chicken.
