Garston Wood is surrounded by the rolling uplands of Cranborne Chase and lies beside the Shire Rack, the ancient name for Dorset's north-west border with Wiltshire. The wood suports a great variety of wildlife, and in spring and summer the wood is alive with birdsong. The hazel and maple trees have been coppiced for many years and beneath them the ground is colourful with wild flowers. The denser oak and ash areas are home to many animals, including fallow and roe deer, badgers, foxes and dormice. Before exploring the wood you step back in time and follow the edge of the trees along the Shire Rack. Close to this ancient border are the earth embankments of a fort that possible dates back 3,000 years.

This grade 1 walk in Footpaths for Fitness Dorset covers a distance of 3 miles. The walk is mainly flat woodland paths, and has an estimated calorie burn of 300.
